What we publish, and what we took out
Every price and every rule on this site is quoted from a document we opened and read, with a link, the GST status the source stated, and the date we read it. Where we could not verify something, we removed it rather than softening it. This page lists what came out.
The rules we follow
- Every dollar figure carries its source and GST status. Where a source does not state whether a figure includes GST, the page says so and the figure is used exactly as published. We do not convert a number whose GST status we do not know.
- Every statement about consent or licensing cites the rule.The clause number, the determination, the council page or the regulator. Not “usually fine”.
- We never invent a business, a person, a review, a rating, a licence number, a job count or a statistic. The previous version of this site did all of those things, which is why most of it was deleted.
- We do not publish our own prices until they exist. Package figures on this site are published market bands, labelled as such. Our from-prices go up when we hold real crew quotes.
- The author is the organisation. No personal bylines, no invented team members, no stock founder photographs.
- Imagery is honest.The plan drawings are labelled as worked examples of a fictional room. There are no “our work” photographs, because there is no work yet.
- Bands are re-checked quarterly. The checked date prints next to the figure so you can see when it was last looked at.
Claims we removed
These were either on the previous version of this site or in the plan that this build followed. None of them survived a check.
The only support we could find for an October 2025 date was a real-estate company's summary of MBIE's document history, and MBIE's own building.govt.nz pages block scripted access so we could not read the primary text. The document we could read, MBIE Determination 2024/054, is dated 2 October 2024, not 2025. We now cite the determination and the Building Act text itself, and say nothing about a guidance change we cannot see.
That sentence appears in Determination 2024/054 as a submission by the homeowners, not as MBIE's own finding, and we could not retrieve the E3/AS1 acceptable solution document itself. We quote the Building Code performance clauses E3.3.4, E3.3.5 and E3.3.6 verbatim from the determination instead, and the determination's own conclusion that the showers failed them.
They were on the previous version of this site and none of them existed. The businesses, the owners' names, the project totals, the weeks on site and the consent timelines were all invented. Every one of those URLs now returns 410 Gone rather than redirecting somewhere plausible.
Also from the previous version. There was no directory, no verification process, no editorial team and no fee arrangement. This is now a renovation company that does the work, not a directory.
They had no source. The region factors used now are CheckMyBuilder's own published regional typicals divided by its New Zealand typical, and the division is shown on the calculator.
Unsourced, and the asbestos date was wrong: WorkSafe's line is 1 January 2000, not 1990.
Superior Renovations says per-m² rates work badly for bathrooms because trade costs are largely fixed, and its own per-m² table is labelled as arithmetic off its published totals rather than a rate it quotes. The calculator uses scope × size band × region instead.
We found no published New Zealand figure we could read. The calculator flags pre-2000 homes and says the cost is not included, rather than guessing at it.
The PGDB describes self-certification in the context of work that needs a building consent. We found no published statement about exempt work, so the site says “where self-certified” and does not promise a certificate.
None found published. The 20 / 35 / 35 / 10 schedule on /pricing is described as what we propose, to be confirmed against the crew's own terms, not as an industry standard.
Superior Renovations makes the claim qualitatively for some Auckland suburbs. We found no measured New Zealand figure, so we repeat no number.
It is a Fontshare release and we could not confirm its licence terms from the download within this build, so the site ships the nearest Google Fonts equivalent in the same role. A cosmetic substitution, recorded here for completeness.
A note on MBIE's website
building.govt.nz returns a bot-protection page to automated requests, so its guidance pages could not be read during this build. Two documents on that domain were readable and are used: Determination 2024/054, as a PDF, and the Building Act itself via legislation.govt.nz. Anything that rested only on an unreadable page was dropped and is listed above. If you have read the MBIE pages and think something here is wrong, please tell us and we will correct it.
Corrections
If a figure here is out of date, or a rule has changed, email us and we will fix it and change the checked date. We would rather be corrected than be confidently wrong on a page that somebody is about to spend $25,000 against.
